Anthony Buccino brief biography: Author, Photographer

Biography: Anthony Buccino, author, writer, editor,  photographer, publisher

Brief Biography

New Jersey author Anthony Buccino's stories of the 1960s, transit coverage and other writings earned four Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism awards. He published five essay collections, three military history books, eight photo collections, and seven full-length poetry collections.

The writer, editor, and photographer writes with clarity and humor in his verse and columns about growing up in the second half of the Twentieth Century. He has been called “New Jersey’s ‘Garrison Keillor’ ” or something to that effect,’ when that was a good thing to be called.

He has written in online publications about life and growing up in northern New Jersey. For five years he wrote about commuting and transit in metro New York-New Jersey.

Buccino's essay and nonfiction books record life in north jersey. His essays and verse tell of life from his 1950s childhood to more recent parenthood to his own aging and turning 60, and so much more.

The Nutley Sons Honor Roll and Belleville Sons Honor Roll books profile the towns’ war dead. Buccino published his dad’s WW2 Letters Home From The South Pacific.

His photo books begin locally in Nutley, Jersey City, NYC, and then expand to New Orleans. They dovetail many things around us in plain sight such as kitchen gadgets and cabinet spices. His photography earned him the nickname "New Jersey's 'Anvil Adams'." He published eight photo collections. His first solo print photography exhibit was at Nutley Public Library during the summer of 2023.

Born in Belleville, the Nutley, N.J., resident first wrote rock and roll record and live theater reviews for local newspapers - Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and Nutley - in the 1970s. He was communications director at national and state trade associations, and editor of a food trade monthly. He made a career in writing and edited business news copy for 12 years at Dow Jones & Co. and The Wall Street Journal professional web pages. He was an associate editor at TheStreet.com.

Artist's Statement

Buccino began his photography journey by shooting film for the stories he produced while working for local newspapers. As such, each of his photographs aims to tell a story, powerfully highlighting unique everyday subjects through different points of perspective. Buccino’s eye for capturing scenes with differing shapes and overlapping patterns establishes a sense of rhythm within his works that encourages viewers' eyes to traverse throughout the image.

Buccino says, "Photography challenges me to stop and see the world, and to try to capture what I see so you can see it, too. Sometimes I set out to shoot something specific. Other times I am called to a scene that says, 'shoot ME!'

"My journalism background -- shooting photos for my stories -- continues to influence my view of the world and the world I see through the camera lens."

Buccino's photo collections include Harrison Next, Gas Stations, In Our Old Kitchen, Old Spices, New Orleans in Plain View, Jersey City Snapshots, Nutley Snapshots in Plain View, and New York City Snapshots in Plain View.
